You can definitely lose weight if you go on a diet and do it right but most of the time dieters quickly become frustrated and disillusioned with them. This happens for a variety of reasons but most of the time it comes down to a simple lack of knowledge about the fundamentals of losing weight. If you select a diet that makes very unrealistic promises, to use one example, you should not be surprised if it lets you down. If you want to go on any sort of diet you need to keep the following guidelines in mind.

Do not believe anything or anybody that promises that it is possible to lose weight without doing any exercise. Some diets might suggest or say this because the person who puts it together knows that other people really want to believe it--even if it isn't actually true. The fact is, it's very unlikely that you will lose weight in the long run without getting regular exercise. Some starvation diets are going to leave you feeling too weak to work out but the weight loss you gain through these diets is temporary and nearly impossible to maintain for any length of time. You'll be a lot better off after you've accepted that working out is part of the weight loss equation and stop avoiding it. One primary reason that lots of people fail at dieting is that they are not aware of how much they are really eating. For one thing, food doesn't always have accurate labels. There are usually hidden calories in the foods that are packaged and this is why some experts say that you need to add ten percent to the number of calories you think you're taking in. Another reason is that not everybody is thoroughly reading their food labels. Some foods that are packaged say that two or more servings are contained within the package and that means that if you eat the whole package of food you need to multiply the calories "per serving" number by the number of servings contained within the package. Finally, people often snack during the day and not pay attention to all the extra calories they're taking in. If you're on a diet, then, you have to start paying close attention to how much you're really eating.

Portion sizes are often what hurts most dieters--it is just what you eat but how much of it that can keep you from losing weight. Whether you are eating your own food or eating in a restaurant, this is going to be a problem. It's absolutely normal to eat whatever has been put in front of you. Your parents probably even taught you to finish whatever was on your plate which is good advice for children. When you are a grown up who wants to lose weight, it can make life really difficult. Try, then, to serve smaller portions to yourself. If somebody else is serving you, tell them that you would prefer a smaller helping. If you are in a restaurant that is serving large portions, don't be embarrassed to order from the children's menu or ask them to wrap up half of your portion so that you can take it home.

To sum up, the way in which you approach your diet is just as important as the choice of diet that you have made. It helps to keep your expectations realistic so that you do not become a victim of one of the many myths that surround dieting. This can help you avoid the popular diets that don't actually work for you and help you stick with the good diets when you find them.
