Nearly one in five quickly age 12 within the U.S. is affected by herpes. It's caused by a virus - either the herpes virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains may cause herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores.
